Initially, we want to look at your goals with Search Engine Optimization.

Not only do you want more traffic for your website, but what you're really after is targeted traffic. Just any traffic won't do, but the keyword specific traffic that will help you make a sale, get memberships, get the word out, sell your services or what ever you need the top search engine rankings for.

It is best to start with the 'long tail' keywords, that is the keywords that are 2,3 and some times 4 words in length, separated by spaces, then comma delimited.

An example is with top10Googlerankings.com, we're going to look at the various tools out there that tell us what keywords are being entered for what subject. Google has some tools and there are others out there, such as key word spy that help you take a good look at the your initial choice of keywords and what really is a popular search term or keywords for your initial keyword choice.

Some tools: http://www.google.com/sktool/# and Google insights for search at http://www.google.com/insights/search/# which should give you an idea of what to be looking for.
Right now, as of this writing, the long tail keywords are a preferred choice and it is much easier to search engine optimize for 'search engine optimization website' than it is for SEO, or "search optimization'

So when you pick your keywords:

1) Start with your business concepts, domain name, product and so forth.
2) Research what others are looking for with respect to what you have to offer.
3) Re-think your keywords.
4) Build long tail keyword lists.
5) Look at all of your content and concatenate the writing to a few simple short 'word sentences'

With this being said, you should be on your way to creating some very good, relevant keyword search terms.
